Types of Multi-Unit Developments

Multi-unit developments can be for residential or commercial purposes. Titles for the units can be one of three types:

  • Torrens Title – where the state guarantees the title to those included in the register
  • Community Title – usually for low, medium or high density housing units, leisure and retail facilities and other community uses

Building units is far more complex than house-building because of the longer approval process and the fact that all elements of the construction need to be completed within the same development plan – including landscaping, footpath repair, access points and fencing.

The local council concerned will have its own Development Control Plan (DCP) with requirements that need to be met before building is approved.
