How to Keep Your Home Cool in Summer

How to Keep Your Home Cool in Summer

Summer is coming!

Brisbane is a beautiful place to live, but Queensland summers can get incredibly hot.

The scorching summer months are almost upon us, so how do we best adapt our homes to prepare for those days when the mercury’s pushing 40?

When trying to cool down your home, it’s important to remember that high energy use in summer does not only increase your power bill, but will also contribute to greenhouse gas emissions and global warming.

We speak to Stroud Homes Brisbane West Sales Consultant Joshua Moore about how you can keep yourself and your house cool this summer and be kind to the environment at the same time.

What are a few things I can do to keep my new Stroud home cool in the summer time?

Good house siting is one of the best things you can do to ensure your house stays cool. You want to avoid having your main living areas facing west (into the hot afternoon sun).

Making good use of cross breezes to allow air flow through your home is also important. Learn to control temperatures by simply knowing when to open up your house for maximum air flow.

You can also choose to add items such as fans and ducted air conditioning.

When building with Stroud Homes in Brisbane’s West, will I get advised on the best designs, options and inclusions for my home to cope with the Queensland heat?

Absolutely. We are more than happy to sit down with you to discuss the best options for your block of land.

Some of our designs are best suited for different facing aspects, as they will either let the sun in on the left or right side via the alfresco.

We try to ensure that the alfresco side is not facing west to avoid the afternoon heat.

Should I install solar panels at my new home, and is that something Stroud Homes can help me with?

At Stroud Homes Brisbane West we can install solar panels during the build process for you.

It is a great way to harness the free energy provided from the sun, especially here in Queensland.

Here’s a few reasons why you should install a (PV) Photovaltaic Solar Panel System:

  • Reduce your energy bills, can be up to $2000 per year!
  • Protect yourself from rising energy costs.
  • Reduce your family’s carbon footprint, leaving the planet a better place for your kids.

What about insulation, is that something I need to consider when building a new home?

Yes, a house without insulation is like a fridge without a door. All of your cool air will escape and hot air will come in.

We include wall insulation, sarking and ceiling batts to our build to achieve a 6 star energy efficiency rating.
