Don’t wait until it’s too late. You don’t have to live in the bush to be threatened by bushfires, as fires can occur in areas where houses are surrounded by bush or parklands.

With our leafy and large areas of natural bushland, bushfire can be a threat, particularly from August to January where our towns experiences dry weather and strong winds.

Bushfire season can vary significantly from year to year, depending on the fuel loads, long term climate and short-term weather conditions.

Your preparations should reflect the threat level which is updated daily on the Rural Fire Service Queensland website.

The steps to take to safeguard your property from bushfire threat are simple:

  • Prepare a Bushfire survival plan and kit.
  • Find out where the nearest neighbourhood Safer Place is located.
  • Make sure your property has clear access for fire trucks.
  • Trim low-laying branches and native shrubs growing close to your home.
  • Remove all rubbish, leaf litter, firewood and fuel containers around your home.
  • Keep grass short by mowing regularly.
  • Rake up leaves, twigs and branches.
  • Fill in any gaps around windows, door frames and roof eves with sealant.
