Where to Start – Part 3
Can I do it Myself?

Building a new home

Now that you have read Where to Start – Part 1 about whether to use a designer/architect and Part 2 about who can you trust, Part 3 covers the last and final point on what to avoid – doing some of the work yourself.

Starting the initial works yourself

Don’t fall into the trap of thinking it is going to be cheaper, quicker or easier if you do some of the construction yourself. On the surface it seems like it might be a good idea, however never give in to the temptation.

Nearly 100% of the time that owners have tried to do something themselves or supply something themselves it ends in complete disaster and cost vastly larger sums of money then what the builder was going to charge.

The temptation is so great that it is hard to resist and sometimes no matter how much you hear it from a builder you just can’t seem to see their point of view – we get it.

Our director, Daniel Chapman, is a 3rd generation builder and understands the sentiment that building is “not very difficult” and “anybody can do it with a bit of effort and determination”.

BUT this is not true at all. Building is not what it used to be. Did you know that the Australian building industry is one of the most heavily regulated industries not just in Australia but in the world? Its regulations are incredibly difficult to navigate and requires a level of knowledge and experience to jump through all the hoops.

The Solution

At Stroud Homes we are passionate in helping people build their dream home and making the processes as stress free as possible. So, if you want to speak directly to the many clients who have had massive issues by doing things themselves please just ask us to put you in contact with them; this may help you in your decision on doing some of the construction work yourself.

Congrats! We know it was quite the read, but it is extremely important! We hope this series of posts were very valuable for you and gave you some more insight into the building process.

If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We are always happy to chat about any questions you may have.
